The History of the Happy Hour

Have you ever wondered how “happy hour” got its name?

You’d be surprised to learn that one of our favorite phrases, “Happy Hour!” actually dates back to WWI and a group of homemakers… Sound intriguing? Read on to learn about the history of happy hour

Happy Hours at Sea

During WWI, a group of well meaning homemakers – determined to make life for our Navy officers at sea more pleasant – started “Happy Hour” on board the Navy’s USS Arkansas, which quickly spread to other ships. These happy hours would be a time for them to smoke and enjoy entertainment including wrestling matches, movies, dances, and boxing in the evenings.

Modern Day Happy Hour

Before dinner drinking really began to take off during the Prohibition. Speakeasys readily advertised happy hours where their guests could enjoy drinks before they headed out to have dinner at restaurants that were not allowed to serve alcohol. As the Prohibition ended in the 1930s, the acceptability of day drinking began to rise in the workplace. For white collar workers in the 1950s and 60s, day drinking was just a part of the job and restaurants began opening advertising “happy hours” for drink specials after work. (Think Mad Men.) Interest in happy hour declined through the 70s, 80s, and 90s, but has since made a modern day resurgence. Let’s drink to that!

Dallas Happy Hour Specials

A big part of what makes our happy hour so spectacular is the happy hour specials. Plenty of tasty options; perfect for a crowd. Here’s the rundown:

·      Beer: Bottled or on draft, The Nodding Donkey has a plethora of delicious options to choose from. Local craft beer, imports, domestics, and more – you’re going to have a hard time deciding which to get. Fortunately you won’t have to. With domestics at $3/glass, imports at $4/glass, and locals at $5/glass, you can afford more than one.

·      Wells: Cheap Dallas drink specials are a happy hour must, and $4 wells open the door to a whole world of possibilities. Order bourbon neat, a vodka tonic, rum and coke and more. Not sure what you want? Just tell our bartender what type of liquor you like and he or she can offer recommendations.

·      Wine: Wind down after a long day at the office with one of our house wines, only $5/glass during Dallas Happy Hour.

·      Half Priced Appetizers: What Happy Hour is complete without a few snacks? Our half priced appetizers hit the spot! Chips and dip are always a hit, so brisket queso and an order of guacamole are “must-haves.” Want more food? Try the crispy chicken tenders, wagon wheels (okay they are really fried pickles), or stacked nachos.

Brewery Spotlight: Revolver Brewing Company

As you know, The Nodding Donkey loves celebrating our Texas heritage and great Texas craft beer. We have many local, Dallas-Fort Worth area craft beers available on tap, including a couple from Revolver Brewing Company.

About Revolver

Travel just about 30 minutes southwest of Fort Worth and you’ll find the picturesque little town of Granbury, Texas. Granbury is home to many shops, wineries, and small town Texas fun, but our favorite stop is the Revolver Brewing Company.

The Revolver Brewing was founded in 2012 by a father/son duo, Ron & Rhett Keisler. In a few short years, folks in North Texas and beyond have taken notice of Revolver because they make delicious craft beer. What makes their beer special? We all know the flavors of the beer start with the water, and we love that Revolver uses it’s own well water from the Trinity Aquifer. It’s the minerals in the water – along with the highest quality ingredients – that give Revover it’s distinctive taste. And their brewery doesn’t use run-of-the-mill equipment either. Revolver’s equipment was all custom produced in the U.S. by a master craftsman. It’s the little things that make this beer stand out!

The Nodding Donkey’s Top Picks

At this point I’m sure you’re wondering, “Okay, so what about the beer?!”

The Nodding Donkey has two of our favorite Revolver Brewing Company craft beers on tap right now:

Revolver Blood & Honey: It’s the beer that put them on the map, and if you haven’t tried it yet, get over to The Nodding Donkey and give it a try! It’s an American Wheat Ale that’s smooth and perfectly crafted with gourmet ingredients including Texas honey, Blood Orange zest, and spices. It goes great with appetizers, burgers, Tex-Mex – just about anything you want to pair it with!

Revolver High Brass: The drinkability is strong with this one. This American Blonde Ale goes down ultra smooth. We love that it’s got a mild pilsner malt that’s flavorful without being overbearing. Another unique thing about this beer? It uses Saphir hops imported from Germany.

Head over to The Nodding Donkey this week for a craft brew from Revolver Brewing Company – or any of our other North Texas Craft Breweries! We love supporting local beer! Don’t forget to join us Monday-Friday, 4-7pm, for Happy Hour Drink Specials every day!
